Meet The Team Of Exclusively HBCU
Co-Owner & Founder
Danielle Simmons born and raised in Southern California (Moreno Valley). Being the only child of single mom, Barbara Ross, she quickly gleaned from her mother the importance of hard work and ingenuity. As an adolescent and teenager she had many business ventures: making mix-tapes, candy sales, jewelry making, bedazzling bandannas, etc. So it was a natural fit for her to choose Business as her major in College.
Growing up in Southern California, she was not familiar with HBCU culture. That is until she saw the show “A Different World”. She told her grandmother she wanted to attend “Hillman” the fictional school on the show and was heartbroken when her grandmother told her it wasn’t real but regained excitement when she told her that there were many schools like Hillman all around the country.
When the time came to choose a college, Danielle had a plethora of choices but chose the prestigious Prairie View A&M University. Danielle attended Prairie View A&M University from 2002-2006 and graduated with her degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Management. While at Prairie View she met her husband, Elton Simmons her freshman year and business partner, Derek Shelton while pledging the Zeta Iota Chapter of Gamma Sigma Sigma National Service Sorority.
She credits attending an HBCU with thoroughly preparing her not only for the workforce but also life. “Prairie View has given me the love of my life, friendships that will last a lifetime and a vast network of professionals."
Danielle is married to her husband of 14 years Elton Simmons. They have two children, Camille and Noah.
Derreka The Diva
Co-Owner & Founder
Derreka Shelton is a native of Huntsville, Texas where she was involved in countless activities and sports that taught her the art of hustle, hard work and determination. This definitely has been a key contributor to her work ethic as an adult! and from her earlier years, she always knew she wanted to own a business and make an impact on the world. Being raised in a town that was less than diverse, Derreka (also known as Derreka the Diva) would watch re-runs of a Different World and she dreamed of going to college in an environment that was truly reflective of her. Upon graduation, she applied to several HBCUs but decided to attend the prestigious and productive Prairie View A&M University.
While at PVAMU, she learned the true art of hustle. Creating products and learning the art of business and entrepreneurship, she began to own her craft and develop her business savvy qualities. She met her now business partner, Danielle Simmons, on the campus of PVAMU while pledging during the Spring of 2006.
Derreka considers education to be the gateway to success, which is one of the meaning reasons she earned a Bachelor's in Interdisciplinary Studies with a minor in mathematics and business. She also went back to the historic PVAMU to to earn a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership with an emphasis in School Administration.
She is a proud member of her beloved sororities, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and Gamma Sigma Sigma National Service Sorority, Inc.
Professionally she has worked in the educational sector as an math educator, instructional coach as well as school administrator.
""I thank God for my HBCU. It gave me everything I needed in order to grow into the confident and ambitious woman that I am today. My family raised me, but PV made me!"
Malik "Juice" Norris
Leading Designer & Creative Director
Malik Norris is a native from Port Arthur, Texas. He was a star athlete within the state of Texas during high school before attending Prairie View A&M University majoring in Computer Engineering. Mr. Norris played tennis for PVAMU for 3 years. With sports being a major part of his life, Malik felt he was nearly lost as he had a lot of time on his hands after leaving to focus on graduating. During his initial months he searched for things to fulfill his time from MC'ing parties & events, breaking down computers, and doing odd jobs.
One day he picked up his phone and downloaded an app where he remembered he loved creating clothes as well as drawing swans. From there he ran into Derreka Shelton who was starting an upstart HBCU focused clothing company, Exclusively HBCU. Malik continued to pursue graphic and fashion design with his own clothing company KÜLTUR & graphic design studio with his brother Jonathan Meekins named Brolic Studios.
Big BROLIC, as the two call it in short, began working closely with Campus Activities Board, Marketing & Communications, & Athletic Departments of Prairie View A&M University. Today Brolic Studios, is still a growing business which not only supports Exclusively HBCU but other clientele including, other college & universities across the country.
